Hello!

Spring has only just begun, and is already shaping up to be a busy season for rescue. Maybe it's a sign of the economic times, but we are taking in more owner surrenders than ever. Add those to the dozens of new dogs coming in from shelters and commercial breeding facilities, and it's easy to remember why our mission is so important.

This month's newsletter shares up-to-the-minute rescue stories and features many exciting ways you can help our organization and share in our mission to save as many precious lives as possible. Also, you won't want to miss our fundraiser auction! Click here to view all the wonderful items.

Thank you for reading. We're so glad you are here!

Texas Bound in the Name of Rescue.
A message from Meredith Coley, Director.

Last week I was called by a young lady in Texas - there was a confiscation of 69 dogs, mostly young Shih Tzus, mostly females, lots of puppies, a few Maltese and Doxies, from a puppymill in an upscale home, in an upscale community. We were asked to help, and without hesitation I said "yes." They are still sorting through the legalities, but if all goes as planned, we will be taking all of these babies into our care. I'll be driving to Texas, to assess, arrange for vetting, and bring home whoever we can. The shelter is altering (at our expense) everyone 3 months and older.

Basic math for vetting is 69 x $39, so we are roughly $2700 to start... but that's just to 'pull' them. Thanks to the generosity of vets working on this heartbreaking case, the reimbursements they are asking for to alter these pups is far less than the norm. However, we will also be faced with the REAL vetting expenses ~ dentals, eyes, tumors, hernias, etc., etc, etc. One little boy has already had surgery for a badly injured eye.

Because of prior neglect and lack of medical care, puppymill rescues cost an average of $500 each before they are adoptable. These furbabies will also need someplace to go - so if you have ever considered fostering, or if you are thinking of adopting, please apply. If you have already adopted, you are first in line. But right now, our first concern is the raising the funds necessary to care for them.

GizmoMeet Gizmo - and Cherish our Mission.
Meet Gizmo... this gorgeous Pekingese boy reminds us all of the importance of our rescue mission. Gizmo arrived severely underweight with tapeworms, and unneutered with testicular tumors. He is blind, his eyes not fully developed either since birth or due to some serious disease he contracted as a small puppy, we're not sure. Gizmo is still wobbly on his feet, and we're not yet sure if this is a neurological problem, or related to his heart murmur.

He likes to be held, petted, stroked, and loved. He enjoys the smells and sensations of the outdoors, and is learning how to enjoy life's little pleasures. Gizmo is a true testament to the amazing canine spirit that we witness every day in rescue.
